If you’ve never tried peanut butter in a smoothie before, you are really missing out. This Banana Peanut Butter smoothie is so quick, very healthy and no chopping required.
I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve ever had peanut butter in a smoothie. I’ve really been missing out.
This smoothie was so rich, creamy and distinctly peanut buttery, so if you like peanut butter, you’ll adore this recipe. It’s also so simple and quick, no messing around, no rinsing fruit, no chopping, just throw it all in the blender.
This smoothie also doesn’t have any added sweeteners which is a bonus. It really doesn’t need them.
What could be better than this smoothie to start your morning?

I used to use organic peanut butter in my smoothies but recently I’ve started making my own Peanut Butter which is so much nicer and actually really easy to make. You can get the recipe here.
Do your children drink green smoothies? This peanut butter smoothie will be a winner for them.
My 11 month old (at the time of writing) baby drinks a green thickie every morning, and she usually agrees with me about how good it is. If I don’t like it, she generally doesn’t like it either.
I think babies must have a very good sense of smell too as sometimes she won’t even try it at all if it’s not a nice recipe. If she doesn’t like the smell she won’t like the taste. She finished up this smoothie very quickly so I could tell she loved it.
We’ve started teaching her sign language and it’s adorable watching her using them. She tells me, no she doesn’t want any more water, and when she’s had enough to eat she tells me she’s finished. It’s great for her to be able to finally communicate with us so well.
Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie: Green Thickie
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Water
- 1 Cup Dairy Free Milk Like this
- 3-4 Bananas
- 2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter Like this
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract Like this
- Optional: 1 Cup Oats Like this or one of the other 20 fillers. Click here to see the fillers
- Optional: 1 Cup Spinach tightly packed or 2 cups loosely packed (or Kale or any other mild greens)
- Buy Good Quality Smoothie Ingredients at the Village Green Marketplace
Instructions
- Blend the ingredients in the following order:
- 1. Blend the dry ingredients and liquid first for a short time
- 2. Blend the greens next for a short time (if using)
- 3. Blend the fruit and the rest of the ingredients until smooth (or as smooth as your blender will allow. High speed blenders may need 2 minutes for a Green Thickie, less powerful blenders may need a lot more, sometimes 5-10 minutes)
- More tips:
- Blending this way allows the dry ingredients to be blended for longest, it means the greens will fit in your blender and your fruit gets less blending so it doesn’t become too hot.
- - Add more water if required to thin it out.
- - Substitute any of the ingredients for whatever you already have.
- - If your smoothie is too warm, you can cool it down in the fridge or freeze some of your ingredients before blending. You can also replace half of the liquids with ice. Add the ice at the end. It is better to add frozen ingredients at the end to cool the smoothie down.
- How much should I drink to replace a meal?
- - Only use a meal replacement if you’ve added the oats/quinoa.
- - This Green Thickie serves 2 so you should DRINK HALF OF THIS RECIPE. But if you have higher calorie requirements you may need to drink more.
- Suitable for Special Diets:
- - Gluten free (Use GF Oats or Quinoa)
- - Raw (Use raw oats/quinoa)
- - Vegetarian, vegan, dairy free, egg free, refined sugar free, wheat free, soya free (don’t use soya milk or tofu),
- - Salt free (don't add salt)
- - Nut free (replace nuts with sunflower or pumpkin seeds. This doesn't include coconuts)

Hi Katherine,I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.
I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!
I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!
I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.
I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.
I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.
I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!
What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.
I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan! Thankful Stephanie

I am so excited to have found your website! This smoothie looks so good! I love making smoothies, but often find I have the wrong proportions, so I don’t get the intended flavor I was hoping for, so thank you for your simple and clear instructions and measurements. Also, thank you for talking about other options one can use for the various ingredients to accomodate allergies and such. As soon as my daughter wakes from her nap we will be trying one of these smoothies!
Katherine Natalia says
Hi Christy, thank you for visiting and leaving such a lovely comment. This smoothie is one of my favourites but so simple. I know what it’s like to be on a special diet and having to adjust everything so I try and provide options for as many diets as I can. Thank you so much for trying this smoothie. Let me know what you thought of it and if you have any questions. Katherine

This is my next breakfast! I have had this combination before and loved it, but it was always with protein powder added, and never oats, so I’m really looking forward to it! I had the Cookie Dough Green Thickie today as my breakfast and it was so delicious ^-^
Quick question though: please could you tell me if you used salted or unsalted peanut butter? Thanks! :)
Katherine Natalia says
Hi Jenny, thank you so much for visiting and taking the time to comment. I’m so glad you liked the Cookie Dough smoothie, thank you for letting me know. Yes the peanut butter smoothie is a great combination isn’t it. I can’t get enough of it! I used an organic peanut butter that had no added sugar but it did have 1g of salt per 100g. I couldn’t get hold of a salt free peanut butter but a little bit of salt balances out the sweet taste perfectly. Many thanks, Katherine
Jenny$1983 says
Thank you for replying! I added a pinch of salt and it really brought out the flavour: loved it :)
Katherine Natalia says
That’s great that you loved it. Thank you so much for letting me know. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Have a great day.

This looks so delicious Katherine! An amazing flavour combination for sure!
Katherine Natalia says
Yes this is one of my more recent favourites, so simple but absolutely delicious. I love the idea of a sugar free challenge. I hardly eat any refined sugar (about once a week) but every time I give it up I go through a detox so I’m reluctant to give it up if I’m just going to eat it again. I’ll be very interested in your progress though.

I just had this for breakfast and lunch this morning. I only used 1 banana because that is all that I had in the house. With 4 kids, I have trouble keeping bananas in the house :) Even with only 1 banana, it was still yummy! It reminds me of peanut butter granola. I will definitely make this again. So glad to have found your blog and I look forward to more of your thickie recipes.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Aww that’s great that you loved this smoothie as much as I do! Thanks so much for letting me know. wow peanut butter granola sounds amazing. I’m going to have to try that! Thank you for visiting. Katherine

Hi! This actually looks so good! I am new to your site and saving as much as possible so I can get started. (= I have a 10 month old and have actually been trying to find out new things to give him and I saw this! Interesting how that works out. (= I was actually wondering how you fed it to your little one? Bottle, sippy cup? Curious because I am absolutely positive that he would love this stuff! Thanks!
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Hi Blair. I’m glad you found my website. That’s great you think your little boy would love green thickies. My little girl loves them and has had them every morning for the last 8 months. I give them to her in a sippy cup. Sometimes if they are a bit thick I have to thin them down a bit. I also sometimes give them to her in a plate in one of the little dish sections and she eats it with a spoon but it can be dangerous as that can result in green splatters all over my kitchen! I’m glad I got her started drinking these early before she gets put off by the green colour. Although in a sippy cup you can’t really tell what colour it is anyway. I’d love to hear how it goes!

This looks so delicious! It’s on my list to try this week. Thanks so much for sharing at A Bouquet of Talent.
Matt says
Thanks! Your website has been a life saver; my picky niece is drinking the other half, and loves it!
Karina says
Wow, this was fantastic. Halved my recipe, except kept the amount of greens the same. It was really gritty, since I used steel cut oats and don’t have a super powerful blender. But definitely delicious, and even with the recipe halved, I was full up with some still in my cup! :)
Thank you for your awesome recipes!
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
That’s great that you liked the recipe despite the grittiness. You can always soak your oats overnight or use oat flour to make it easier to blend or run your blender for a lot longer. I’m great it filled you up so much. Thank you for letting me know.

Hi Katherine,
Im new to your blog but Im totally in love with it and the wonderful recipes you have here .
I have a quick question for you. Im starting the Insanity workout program and they are recommending to drink a high protein shake to keep up with the workouts that has also “Creatine” , they have their own version called ” Results and Recovery drink” but it is extremely expensive and was wondering if you can recommend high protein shakes for me that I can make at home knowing that are 100% natural and dont have harming chemicals. hope to hear from you soon. :)
I will try this recipe tomorrow
Gaby
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Hi Gaby
I’m sorry but I don’t drink protein drinks or use the powders so I can’t really recommend any. My opinion is that we can get enough protein if we eat a whole foods diet, which I do so I’ve never had the need for extra protein. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. In the future I may create a high protein smoothie based on natural foods. You could just add more protein rich foods for your smoothie such as nuts or seeds?
Jessica says
Mmmm just made it! it was a great smoothie after a workout! Thank you very much!
Danielle Santiago says
Hi! I was just wondering, for the teaspoon of vanilla, are you talking about vanilla extract?
Rose Hatchell says
I’m do glad that I have found your site. I have tried many smoothies/thickies from here and i absolutely love them. Even with the tweaks that I make because of my food allergies.
If you ever need any more testers r your book, just let me know :-)
Rose Hatchell says
This thickie was AMAZING! I have food allergies. This was the subs I made. 1/4 c. steel cut oats (soaked), almond butter, coconut water instead of plain water, natures way pea protein, one scoop, everything else stayed the same. Came in at 423 Cal for 16.9 Oz. bottle. 16 cal, 70 carbs, 30 sugar, 0 sat. fat, 1 poly fat, 4 mono fat, 0 cholesterol.
Absolutely love your site.
P.s. It made more. If I had bigger bottles, it would have fit 18 Oz. In each bottle.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
I’m so glad you liked it. Thanks for letting me know about the quantity.

Hi Katherine, just a question or two! Can I use soya milk as a dairy free alternative? Also the peanut and banana thickie, is it still counted as a meal replacement without the oats? As I find the oats a bit too much. I made a green thickie yesterday I was full for hours. Also is it ok to replace breakfast and lunch with a Smoothie and then have a normal meal at night? Would I still lose weight? Thanks.
Lola says
I just had this smoothie and it was absolutely delicious! I tasted like ice cream and I almost couldn’t believe that something that tasted so good could be healthy. Thank you!
