Pom’s Kiwi and Pomegranate Smoothie
Green Smoothie of the week
[pinit] Is it possible to fall in love with a country you’ve never visited? I adore everything about New Zealand even thought I’ve never been there. So I thought I’d bring together the Poms (British) and the Kiwis (New Zealanders) with this adorable Pom’s Kiwi and Pomegranate Smoothie.
New Zealand Obsession
[pinit] My obsession with New Zealand began as a child when my auntie and cousin from New Zealand came over to the UK to visit. I loved their accent, their calendars with beautiful New Zealand mountains on them. But best of all I loved my pillow case with a kiwi bird cartoon on it.
I started a kiwi bird cartoon strip and my favourite fruit as a child was the kiwi.

Kiwi: Bird or fruit?
The kiwi bird is the cutest thing I’d ever seen. It is a brown fluffy flightless bird.
New Zealanders are called Kiwis after the bird not the fruit. But they were also the first country to sell the kiwi fruit commercially, so they renamed it from the Chinese Gooseberry to the Kiwifruit.
New Zealand Travels
When I first met my husband, he had to go over to New Zealand to work over there for 6 weeks. He fell in love with the place and we talked about nothing else but moving out to New Zealand after we were married. We spent a year planning it before finally deciding against it. I still know that when I do visit I’ll love it.
Pom’s Kiwi and Pomegranate Smoothie
This recipe was inspired by an ingredients list sent to me by one of my readers, Nancy. She said the combination was delicious. I included all her ingredients but substituted pomegranate seeds for pomegranate juice. I happened to see a pomegranate reduced in price so although they’re not in season for another month yet I thought it would be a good time to try them.
This smoothie is smooth, sweet with an interesting tang. I thought it would be very bitter but the mango provides just enough sweetness to make it very palatable.
Trying Pomegranate for the first time
I have tried to buy a pomegranate before but when I opened it, it just tasted awful so I’m guessing it never ripened.
How to tell if a Pomegranate is ripe
A pomegranate is ripe if it is a dark red colour and has square sides. It will be round like an apple when it’s not ripe. You will also be able to squash it a little bit. You may notice the skin can easily be scratched when it is ripe.
How to get the seeds out of a pomegranate [pinit]
I found a lot of information about how to get the seeds out of a pomegranate, but I actually found it very easy. If you make about 6 scores with a knife down the pomegranate all around it and then pull it open with your fingers you will just be able to pull out the seeds. It doesn’t matter if some pith is still attached as we are going to blend it all up anyway. If you want to remove all the pith you could add the insides of the pomegranate to a bowl full of water and that makes it easier to get the seeds out.
If you can’t find a pomegranate for this recipe, feel free to use pomegranate juice. Just replace the water with pomegranate juice. You may need slightly less juice than water so add it gradually.
I really enjoy trying out new fruits and being able to share them with you. It makes me much more adventurous and it’s great to be able to buy fruit that is on special offer and know that you are able to use them in your meals.
So now you know all about my obsession with New Zealand and all things Kiwi! And hopefully this smoothie will get you out of your comfort zone.
Have you ever had a feeling you’ll absolutely love something before you’ve tried it? Sometimes you just know.

Hi Katherine,I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.
I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!
I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!
I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.
I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.
I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.
I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!
What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.
I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan! Thankful Stephanie

Aww, you’re closer than most of us being in Australia. It is a beautiful place, but Australia is also a place I’d love to visit. Hopefully one day….

wow! what a combination of flavors. I think I would really, really like it.

Thank you! Yes this smoothie is more unusual but is worth the effort and doesn’t take as long as you would think. It got me out of my comfort zone with pomegranates anyway! Many thanks for stopping by.

pomegranates are worth the work! I love them! Too bad they are so hard to get and so expensive.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Yes I’ve developed a new love for them too. We can always get them in larger supermarkets here in the UK and they aren’t too expensive as a treat but not for an everyday smoothie. We don’t often appreciate how much fruit we have access to here in the UK. Most of our stuff is imported so we get a lot of different stuff.
