Why I’m reducing the amount of natural sugar in my smoothies 1I’m sure it won’t come as a surprise to you when I say we all eat far too much sugar.

The maximum amount of sugar that women are supposed to eat each day is 6 teaspoons – but most people actually end up eating an average of 19 teaspoons of sugar per day!

Sugar is one of the most harmful ingredients we have in our modern diet and it is responsible for so much disease and death that we really have to start taking this seriously.

And we’re just talking about refined sugar here. I would actually go so far as to say that we don’t need any refined sugar in our diets at all. The only sugar we should be consuming is the sugar that is naturally found in whole foods such as fruits and vegetables.

For a very long time I have been a proponent of avoiding refined sugar but still eating quite a lot of natural sugar which are what my Green Thickies (complete meal green smoothies) contain.

However I’m personally cutting down the amount of natural sugar in my own diet so I just wanted to let you know why and to give you some help so that you can do the same.

I used to follow a raw food diet and the bulk of my calories came from fruit – but I did find mainly eating fruit hard as I’d feel hungry all the time and spent a lot of time eating fruit.  

Also those that stay on a raw food diet for a long time often find they have a lot of problems with their teeth. I believe there is a few reasons for this.  

  1. They consume too much natural sugar
  2. The natural sugar is sitting on their teeth all day as they have to snack on fruit all day, so it doesn’t get brushed away.
  3. They don’t have enough fat soluble vitamins (such as A, D and K2, often found in animal products) which protect your teeth from cavities.

So, as I wanted to still reap the benefits of fruit and leafy greens without the problems above, I invented the Green Thickie which not only includes fruit, but also contains healthy fats and natural sources of protein and other superfoods which balance out your blood sugar levels and stop you getting hungry.

So eating fat and protein with your fruit is SO much better than just eating the fruit alone.

But if we are eating 2 meals a day which are high in natural sugars – sometimes this can still be too much.

I believe that God created a world full of fruit that was natural and good for humans at the time – but a lot has changed since then.  

For a start – fruit has become a lot sweeter. It has been modified so that it contains more natural sugar, less seeds and less fiber than it used to. It also has less nutrients due to the conditions of the soil and the decline of the natural world in general.

And then we’ve got genetics and everybody is different. Some people live in the tropics and their bodies are designed to tolerate a lot more sweet tropical fruit.

But then you’ve got other people who migrated much further away from the equator to colder climates and these people wouldn’t have been able to grow much fruit – if any.

For example – I live in Scotland and we can only grow a few berries here for a few months of the year. That’s it! So most of the time people here would have eaten some vegetables such as kale, potatoes and they also ate a lot of fish and oats which grow very well in Scotland.

So you could say that people who have come from a long line of ancestors who all lived in Scotland are not as suited to eating fruit but they should eat what is natural to them as they can tolerate that much more easily.  

Also having much less sun means your body will process foods in a different way. When it’s cold and wet you need more fat on your body to keep you going for much longer until you get your next meal. Unlike those who live in the tropics who would see fruit growing all around them.

But the problems comes when we all start migrating all over the world and we have no idea what to eat because our ancestors ate completely different foods to what would be natural in our local environment.

Or things get even more complicated when your ancestors come from all over the world like mine did.  

So what kind of diet should we eat?

We just have to experiment personally and find out what agrees with us better.

I do know this though – that most societies did eat some kind of leafy greens. There is a good reason for this. They grow well in most places and they are some of the most nutritionally dense food on the planet.

So for that reason I’d never stop eating my leafy greens, and I really notice the difference when I don’t have them.  

Leafy greens make me feel alive.

So where does this leave Green Thickies?

I can’t see that I would ever stop eating Green Thickies because I find it hands down the fastest, easiest and most delicious way to consume my leafy greens every single day.

So I’m still drinking Green Thickies.

But I’m currently doing some experiments with my diet and taking in a lot less natural sugar.

So what’s in my Green Thickies now?

I include a lot of the following ingredients in my Green Thickies:

  • Leafy Greens
  • Berries such as raspberries, blueberries or strawberries
  • Coconut
  • Avocados
  • Liquid – Water, Herbal Tea or Coconut Milk
  • Nuts or Seeds
  • Collagen
  • No sugar healthy sweeteners such as stevia
  • Flavourings such as cacao, essential oils, vanilla, cinnamon,
  • Sometimes eggs or sweet potato occasionally

So as you can see, I have only included some low sugar fruit and the rest of the ingredients are very low in natural sugars.  

I do include a lot of healthy fat and protein in my smoothies as these do wonders to balance out your blood sugar levels.
