  1. Use the correct ratio of fruit and greens.  To avoid tasting the greens you need to use a ratio of at least 60% fruit to no more than 40% greens
  2. Start with spinach or chard.  These are the two most mild leafy greens.  If you use spinach or chard in your green smoothie you won’t taste it at all.
  3. Use sweet and creamy fruit.  To make a lovely sweet smoothie use sweet fruit such as bananas, mangos, pineapple, or peaches.  Berries can be a bit more tart and can take a bit more getting used to.
  4. Be flexible and adjust if necessary.  If you don’t like the recipes you’ve tried, search for another one, if you’re finding you are detoxing too fast, slow it down.  Take your time.  Congratulate yourself for any small wins.
  5. Build up to it gradually.  You might want to start with just one green smoothie every other day, and progress up to one or two per day when you get used to it.  Your body will be suddenly getting rid of a lot of toxins, which can cause detox effects if you go too extreme too quickly.  So take it easy and gradually reduce your unhealthy habits at the same time. Gradually reduce coffee and you won’t notice the detox effects so much.
  6. Have a green smoothie as a snack.  When you first start drinking green smoothie, just try and include one small smoothie as a snack alongside your existing meals.  You will notice you are eating less food and your cravings reducing.

Almond Milk

About 3 times lower in calories than dairy, and much easier for most of us to digest.  It also won’t increase your blood sugar levels.  


Cucumber contains antioxidants that will help battle free radicals, and helps the body flush out toxins thanks to its hydrating effect.  It also brings down blood pressure.


Lemons are a great weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contain many nutrients including calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene–that promote immunity and fight infection.


Bananas reduce swelling, aid weight loss, strengthen the nervous system, and help with the production of white blood cells, all due to high levels of vitamin B-6. They also provide you with increased energy and stabilise blood sugar levels.

  • 1 cup spinach or chard
  • 1 cup almond milk (or other dairy free milk)
  • ¼ cucumber chopped
  • Juice of ½ lemon or lime
  • 1 banana chopped (fresh or frozen) or 1 mango
  • 1 cup mango or 1 small mango (fresh or frozen) or 1 more banana
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds (linseeds, or any other unsalted nuts or seeds)
  • 1 cup ice (optional to cool smoothie down)


  1. Add the spinach and almond milk and blend for a few seconds.
  2. Then add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.
  3. Cool down in the fridge or by using ice or frozen fruit.
