Most people these days are concerned about getting enough protein in their diets. As a lot of people eat in a hurry, the popularity of protein shakes has risen significantly in the last few years.
In 2016, 3 billion dollars worth of protein shakes were purchased in the United States.
Although protein is an essential part of our diet, I don’t believe is more important than all of the other macronutrients and micronutrients that are critical for good health.
My aim is to share healthy recipes for protein shakes that contains all of the needed nutrients including protein, and are based on whole plant based foods.
I believe that once you cover all of your nutritional bases, you’ll feel better than you’ve ever felt. It’s certainly working for me!
Of course most people are too busy for sit down healthy meals containing a good amount of protein and other nutrients. And I totally understand as I am also too busy for cooking and eating 3 healthy meals each day.
So I’m not surprised protein shakes have become more popular than ever before.
Most people whizz up their protein powder with some water and it keeps the hunger at bay for a little while. This is a popular snack, but I believe it’s better to get enough calories in our meals so that we’re not hungry for snacks, and we’re not reaching for extra protein powder because we are completely satisfied.

I like to get all of my calories and my nutrients in my meals as I’m too busy for snacking.
Although some protein powder is healthier than others, I do believe that whole foods containing all your nutrients, rather than isolated and highly processed nutrients are so much better for your health.
So I started to make and create my own protein shake recipes based on whole foods. I call them ‘Green Thickies’. I calculate them so they contain complete nutrition. You will get more than enough protein from natural sources, including all of your other nutrients.

This is the only other blender that truly compares favorably to the Vitamix. I also own this Blendtec blender and I use it almost as often as my Vitamix. High speed, makes the hardest of ingredients extremely smooth.

Sistema Shaker To Go Smoothie Bottle
This is my number one favorite smoothie bottle that I keep going back to time after time. It’s also very reasonably priced, and you can get it in most Amazon stores across the world.
Here is what I love about it:
- It has a large capacity which is important to me. When you cram in loads of spinach into your smoothies, it makes the volume much larger – hence the need for a bigger smoothie bottle. The capacity is 700ml / 23.67oz / 2.96cups. Enough for a nice filling 500 calorie complete meal smoothie.
- It doesn’t leak. This is my primary concern about smoothie bottles – they have to be leak proof, because who wants to be covered in thick green slime?
- It can be easily cleaned by hand or in the dishwasher.
- It is very easy to drink from – just flip open the lid and drink.
- It doesn’t have a built in straw or any areas of the bottle that can’t be reached. Straws are a mold hazard waiting to happen. I like to be able to see and clean all areas of my smoothie bottles.
- It is long lasting and robust. I have had mine for years and they are still going strong. I now have 4 of these, 2 for me and 2 for my husband. You can get them in a range of colors like pink, blue and green.
