So it turns out she was right…
Your Mother said ‘eat your greens’ and most of us didn’t listen.
So now you’re concerned about your health and I’m going to help you with that.
I’m going to share 10 reasons why you absolutely should make it a priority to eat your greens, show you how many greens you should eat daily and where to get them – and I’ll even give you some tips for making that extremely easy. (And no – it doesn’t involve salad)

So here are the reasons you should start eating leafy greens each and every day:
-
Helps you to lose weight
Leafy greens are full of fibre which help to fill you up. They are also extremely low in calories so you can add as many as you want to your diet – and feel full without the calories. How good is that? I have lost incredible amounts of weight by including more leafy greens in my diet. You can read about that here.
2. Gives you a massive energy boost
Most people notice an immediate and very noticeable energy boost when they start including more leafy greens in their diet. That is because leafy greens contain magnesium and B Vitamins which most people are severely lacking in their diets.
When I have had periods of not eating my greens – I have noticed that I have a lot less energy and start to crave foods such as chocolate on a regular basis.
3. Prevents aging of the skin
Leafy greens are rich in Vitamin E and Vitamin K which prevents ageing of the skin and helps it to look youthful and prevents sun damage.
One cup of leafy greens has at least your daily requirement of Vitamin K, and Kale provides a staggering six times your daily needs.
This is one area that I can definitely vouch for. I am frequently told that I look 10 years younger than I actually am – and some people even tell me I seem to look younger and younger every year. I am of course over the moon about this. Who wouldn’t want to look younger every year?
4. Keeps your bones strong
You need calcium to help keep bones strong. There is some debate about where to get our calcium from, but nobody is denying that we definitely need it. People often forget to supplement calcium but if you eat enough leafy greens you can definitely get enough of this mineral.
5. Helps prevents strokes
Manganese which you can get from leafy greens is good for preventing strokes. Sounds like a good reason to eat leafy greens to me.
6. Helps prevents Heart Disease
Leafy greens contain a good amount of folate which helps to prevent heart disease.
7. Helps to maintain liver health
Betaine helps to maintain liver health and is found in high numbers in spinach.
8. Helps to digest protein
For those who eat meat or other acid forming foods, greens can help your body to digest the protein much better because greens are very alkaline so they balance out acid forming foods very nicely.
9. They contain ridiculous amounts of micronutrients
The sheer number of vitamins and minerals contained in leafy greens can rarely be beaten with any other type of food. The nutrients are natural, perfectly balanced and optimal for our bodies. Yes – we are designed to eat leaves!
10. They are safe and natural
Leafy greens are one of the most perfect foods we can eat. I can’t think of a more well balanced food that I can easily add to so many different types of foods.
How much leafy greens should we eat daily?
The USDA’s ChooseMyPlate website says we should consume four to six servings of vegetables each day, and at at least three to four servings of dark green leafy vegetables a week. One serving is one cup which is approximately the amount you would add to one green smoothie (see below). I get a lot more leafy greens in my diet than this – I normally get at least 2 cups a day, 5 days a week, and I’ve never felt better. I have been doing this for years and I’ve never felt stronger or healthier.
What type of leafy greens can I eat?
There are so many different types of leafy greens. You can read more about the different types of leafy greens here.
What I normally do is buy some fresh greens such as spinach at the start of the week, and when those run out I often end up using a Green Powder. I am a big fan of fresh food but where I live – we are quite limited to the different types of leafy greens available, and as it’s important to rotate your greens – I do supplement with a green powder to ensure variety in my diet.
This is the green powder I currently use and absolutely love. Click here to read more about the many benefits of this particular powder.
What is the best way to get my daily dose of leafy greens?
Even for those of us who adore salads – making sure we eat a salad daily can often be quite difficult. It takes too long to plan, too long to make and too long to eat. Plus if you’re not careful you can end up loading your salad with fat or processed dressings.
And all that chewing!
So what’s the solution?
I mainly add leafy greens to my filling green smoothies (Green Thickies) as I can’t taste them at all, they blend up really well and I don’t have to spend ages chewing them.
I often get a lot of questions from people asking me – is it safe to drink Green Thickies while pregnant and is it safe to drink Green Thickies while breastfeeding and to give to my kids? And the answer is always – ‘would you eat spinach or lettuce or kale when you are pregnant, breastfeeding or give it to your kids?’ and if the answer is yes – then Green Thickies are no different.
They are made from natural – everyday ingredients – superfoods you can buy at any store. And you will feel amazing when you start drinking them.

Hi Katherine,I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.
I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!
I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!
I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.
I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.
I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.
I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!
What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.
I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan! Thankful Stephanie
