People are going crazy for Turmeric right now, but what is it and how can you actually consume it for maximum health benefits? I show you how to make an amazing Turmeric milk which is made up from turmeric powder and golden milk.
Turmeric, is a bright yellow spice and a powerful medicine that has long been used in the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine and cooking. Its anti-inflammatory properties are used to treat a wide variety of conditions.
Turmeric is used in cooking and when combined with other herbs and spices such as black pepper the healthy benefits are increased even further. Turmeric helps keep the body exceptionally healthy when taken daily.
Turmeric Health Benefits
Turmeric contains a compound known as curcumin. Curcumin is thought to be the most powerful agent in turmeric. As an antioxidant, curcumin is able to neutralize free radicals. These chemicals can cause great amounts of damage to healthy cells and cell membranes.

According to research published in the August 2006 issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The quercetin in onions when mixed with the curcumin in turmeric was found to reduce both the size and number of precancerous lesions in the human intestinal tract.
Turmeric and Cauliflower are also a great combination. When tested singly, both ingredients greatly inhibited the growth of human prostate cancer cells. When combined they were shown to have a protective effect and significantly reduced both tumor growth and the ability of the prostate cancer cells to spread (metastasize). Wow!
Turmeric also has shown benefits for Cystic fibrosis, liver health and has the ability to dramatically lower cholesterol.
How to Take Turmeric Powder
Turmeric powder can be used in all kinds of recipes and has an earthy flavor. It is commonly used in curries. It can also be put into capsules and taken several times a day. Smoothies are a good way to get more Turmeric into your diet. Check out my Turbo Charged Turmeric Vegetable smoothie here.
My favorite way to consume turmeric is in Turmeric milk! If you take Black pepper with turmeric it increases its bioavailability.
Turmeric dosage
Turmeric has a number of medicinal benefits when taken in a dose less than 500 mg. Doses over 1500 mg over long periods of time can cause side effects.
Turmeric side effects
High doses of turmeric over long periods of time should be avoided and can result in side effects such as nausea, gallbladder and liver problems and bleeding. Turmeric is very safe when used as a spice in your food and these warnings are for people exceeding the recommended dosages of a turmeric supplement.
How to Make Turmeric Milk
Step 1: Tumeric paste
Ingredients for Turmeric paste
- 1/4 cup of turmeric powder (get the best quality here)
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground black pepper
- 1/2 cup of filtered water
Directions:
Mix all ingredients in a small a small sauce pan and mix well. Turn the heat to medium and stir until the mixture thickens into a paste. This does not take long.
Let this mixture cool and then keep it in a small jar in the fridge.
Step 2: Golden Milk
Ingredients for Golden Milk
- 1 cup of almond milk (hemp or coconut milk are also good options) or raw cow or goat milk.
- 1 teaspoon coconut oil
- 1/4 teaspoon or more of turmeric paste (recipe above)
- Honey or coconut sugar to taste
Directions:
Combine all the ingredients, except sweetener in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium. While heating make sure you stir constantly and do not allow the mixture to boil. Add the sweetener to taste.
