I am so happy to share with you what I have learned through my weight loss process. Part of my weight loss success was due to me making thick shakes and smoothies!

There’s nothing better than an ooey-gooey thick shake in my opinion.

Thick shakes can be a great base for a smoothie bowl, they can be eaten with a spoon or they can be drunk straight from a glass.
The best thing about thick shakes is they are very filling which helps you avoid hunger pangs and cravings. This is especially good when you’re trying to lose weight.
Below is the basic recipe for my own healthy green shake – I call it a Green Thickie. It will give you an idea of what a healthy thick shake should consist of before finding out how to make your own healthy shakes.
Difference between Thick Shakes, Shakes, Protein Shakes, Meal Replacement Shakes & Thick Smoothies
Shakes
Shakes are a combination of milk (almond, soy or coconut) and dry ingredients like frozen banana or avocado. They usually have a creamy texture.
Thick Shakes
If you add more dry ingredients to your regular shake and less liquid base you will get a thick shake.
The best way to make sure that your shake will have the optimum texture every time is to measure the portions of ingredients.
Protein Shakes
After a workout, your muscles need protein to recover and grow. Experts say that you should consume 20-30 grams of protein after physical activity.
The best choice for you is to make healthy protein shakes (regular shake with extra protein-rich ingredients).
Thick Smoothies
To make sure you consume enough vitamins daily you should choose to make healthy smoothies.
One of the healthiest ingredients you can include in a thick shake is leafy greens as you won’t taste them, but they provide a very high amount of vital nutrients.
For example here is the nutrition table for 100 g of spinach:
Calories | 23 |
Carbohydrates | 3.8 g |
Protein | 3 g |
Fat | 0.3 g |
Fiber | 2.4 g |
This portion of the fiber is 10 percent of the daily value.
You put healthy vegetables and fruits in the blender and make tasty healthy meals that will provide you with enough vitamins for the day.
Meal Replacement Shakes
When I started my journey I wanted to make meal replacement shakes that I could substitute for a meal of solid food. This is because I didn’t have time for cooking or eating regular meals after I had a baby. All I was eating was chocolate so I obviously needed to find a better solution than that.
As soon as I started drinking homemade healthy meal replacement shakes, the weight just fell off me.
They are the best choice for you if you want to lose weight.
Are Thick Shakes Healthy?
Thick shakes are not always healthy. Most thick shakes are made with dairy milk, dairy cream, or dairy ice cream which is harmful for the health and prevents you losing weight.
Worse still are the thick shakes that you make straight out of a packet. These contain a number of hamrful chemicals that won’t do your health any good in the long term.
The only healthy thick shakes are those that you make at home which follow a plant based whole foods recipes. All of the recipes on my website fit into this category. consist
I suppose that you too live in a world full of stress and you are always in a hurry. This kind of lifestyle can seriously damage your health.
The fact that an alarm wakes you up every morning is stressful enough. Isn’t it?
You can always find 2 minutes daily to do something good for yourself like make a homemade shake. Be consistent and results will come.

How To Make Healthy Thick Shakes
First of all, you need to find the right ingredients. Below you will find 56 ingredients you can use to make your own healthy shake.
To make homemade healthy thick shakes, all you do is add your liquid base, fruits, and veggies to the blender, followed by some natural thickening ingredients such as nuts, seeds, avocado, frozen ingredients or whole grains such as oats. Then you blend until you get a nice and smooth drink.
Here are some tips to get the tastiest shake ever:
- If it’s not sweet enough you can always add a teaspoon of [amazon_textlink asin=’B00GRY33AC’ text=’stevia’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’greethic-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’02126782-c810-4154-be13-30f83a8ced77′]. Stevia is a sugar substitute made from a plant and it is 100-300 times sweeter than sugar. The best thing about this is that stevia has zero calories.
- Freeze a smaller banana and add it to your shake. It will make your shake smoother.
- If you intend to use grains like oats you can boil them with water before adding to your shake. Boiling the grains will help them blend better.
- If you use nuts or seeds, soak them in water night before. This will increase the potential health benefits and make them easier to digest.
56 Easy Ways To Make Healthy Thick Shakes And Smoothies
Now you know how to make your first shake or smoothie. Below is the list of potential ingredients you can include.
The best way is to find some basic ingredients you like and then try adding something new until you get the flavor that suits you the best.
I have broken the ingredients into different sections to make it easier for you.
Thickening Frozen Ingredients
Frozen ingredients are great because they are easily accessible and you can use them throughout the year. You don’t need to wait for the particular season to arrive to be able to find them.

1) Any frozen fruit, vegetable or other ingredients
2) Ice
Thickening Fruit
There are so many different vitamins necessary for you to be healthy. But it’s hard to plan all your meals perfectly so you include all needed nutrients.
That’s why I like to start my day with a nutritious thick shake, so I make sure I get all the vitamins and minerals my body needs.
So, here are my favorite fruits you can add to your shake and make a great vitamin bomb.
All of these fruits will thicken up your smoothie, especially if they are frozen first.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: 1 cup
3) Mango

Thickening Vegetables
Vegetables are healthy food and low in fat, salt and sugar. I am sure that there are some vegetables you just don’t like to eat.
But, that is no problem anymore. Just mix it together with other ingredients and enjoy your shake. You really won’t be able to taste any of these ingredients as the taste of the fruit overpowers them.
All of these vegetables are lower in terms of water content which means they are the perfect thickening ingredient to add to a shake.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: 1 cup
14) Avocado
15) Butternut Squash
16) Pumpkin
17) Sweet Potato
18) Carrot
19) Zucchini / Courgette
Thickening Nuts
Nuts are the best source of healthy fats and oils. Besides that, they are the best as healthy snacks.
As they are so dense, you don’t need to add many to a smoothie to really thicken it up and provide extra calories.

Thickening Seeds
Seeds are rich in fiber. Fiber helps your digestive system.
They are the best choice for someone who wants to lose weight because they accelerate metabolism.
The great thing about seeds is they soak up a lot of water, which is perfect for thickening shakes.

Thickening Legumes
Did you know that legumes are classified as both a vegetable and a protein? This makes them one of the healthiest foods you can include in your diet. They are literally bursting with nutrients, very high in protein and best of all, they are very low in fat which is perfect for weight loss.
Believe it or not you can easily add any of the following legumes to your smoothies without even tasting them. They are actually quite neutral in taste so you really don’t have to worry that this is going to ruin your smoothie.
Beans are also very dense so when you add them to a smoothie, they thicken it up perfectly without adding a lot of extra fat to your shake.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: ½ cup
34) Navy Bean
35) Black Beans
36) Lima Beans/ Butter Beans
37) Edamame Beans

40) Tofu
41) Garbanzo/ Chickpeas
42) Peas
Thickening Coconut
Coconut consists of 3.3% proteins, 33% fat and 15.2% carbs per 100 g. It is a great source of energy. The best thing about coconut is its wonderful aroma.
Coconut is quite low in water content and it is similar to nuts in terms of fat content. So you don’t want to add too much to your shake, but even a small quantity will thicken it up nicely.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: ¼ cup

Thickening Base Liquid
Including a liquid base for your smoothie will make it much easier to blend.
Using water as a liquid base for your smoothie will really thin your smoothie out, and that’s not what we want.
So using thicker liquids such as plant based milks or plant based yogurts can really help to thicken your smoothie.
Ninja Thickening Tip
Did you know that it is even possible to make a shake without any liquid at all?
If you start by adding enough fruit or high water vegetables to cover the blades of your blender, you can start your blender very slowly and it will create a liquid out of the fruit or veggies.
This makes the shake very thick before you’ve even added any other thickening ingredients.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: 1 cup
46) Replace water with soy yogurt or [amazon_textlink asin=’B004HK46C2′ text=’plant based milk’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’greethic-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’426ae665-162f-48e7-ae8c-8b8fa123aa8c’]
Thickening Grains
Grains are a great smoothie ingredient because they fill you up for a long time. That is important for weight loss.
Grains are also low in water content which makes them a perfect ingredient to thicken up your smoothie.
If you want a very smooth texture, I would suggest using a high-speed blender if you want to add grains to your smoothie. Unless you like a ‘grainy’ texture that is!
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: a ½ cup of cooked/ soaked grains or rolled oats straight from the packet.

Thickening Dried Fruit
My advice is to buy some dried fruit mix. They come in the small packages that can provide you with a lot of vitamins in just one portion.
As dried fruit is, well, dry, it doesn’t contain extra water that would thin out the smoothie. So dried fruit are the perfect ingredient for thickening smoothies. They also provide more of a gelatinous texture rather than a creamy texture.
Watch your quantities with dried fruit though as they can be very high in calories.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: ¼ cup

Thickening Extra Ingredients
The following ingredients can be used to give some extra taste AND thickness to your shake. Cacao powder will give that sweet chocolate taste but it won’t add much more calories to your meal.
I actually prefer carob powder over cacao as you still get all the chocolatey taste without the caffeine and theobromine which can make a lot of people feel quite ill.
Quantity to add to 1 serving of thick shake: 1-2 tablespoons

How To Use A Blender Or A Food Processor To Make A Thick Shake Without Blowing It Up
Using a blender is a very simple process (no manual needed).
To begin with, get all of your ingredients ready:
- Fruits/Vegetables
- Liquid base (water, soya milk, almond milk)
- Frozen ingredients
- Nuts, seeds or coconut
- Legumes
- Grains such as rolled oats (no need to pre-cook oats)
- Dried fruit such as dates
- Extra ingredients such as cacao powder
Put your chosen ingredients into the blender jar and add a small amount of the liquid. When you start blending you will see if you need to add more liquid.
Add as many ingredients as you want.
Blenders are the best for smoothies because they handle liquids much better than food processors. However, on the other hand, some blenders are not usually powerful enough for blending some hard ingredients.
A high-speed blender is the best choice when it comes to making thick shakes (see below).
But that doesn’t mean you can’t make thick shakes in cheaper blenders. You just have to be careful not to blow them up! I have blown up several cheap blenders in my time so I know what not to do.
If you don’t have a high-speed blender, what I suggest you do first is add the liquid and then a small amount of one ingredient. See how that blends then add another ingredient. Layer up your blending like that so you don’t stress your blender out too much.
A lot of blenders won’t even blend frozen ingredients so you need to check your particular model before you even attempt this.
Even if your blender can’t process frozen ingredients, that doesn’t mean you can’t use frozen food. What you need to do is defrost your frozen ingredients and then squeeze out any extra liquid. Now add it to the blender and it will blend just fine. You just won’t get as thick of a smoothie as you would if you used a high-speed blender.
If your blender gets stuck, turn the power off, add a small amount of liquid and give the contents a stir with a spoon to disperse the thick ingredients. Now when you blend it again, it should get going again.
Never force your blender if it’s struggling.
If you are struggling to make thick shakes in your blender, it might be time to try a food processor instead.
Food processors mostly come with additional skills like chopping, slicing or shredding. They are great if you want to process food without adding any liquid.
The only downside with blenders is that you have to keep stopping to scrape down the sides, it doesn’t make such a smooth blend, and it is difficult to get a container that is exactly the right size for your smoothie so the ingredients don’t end up on the outside of the food processor which makes it impossible to continue using.
I shared a list of ingredients above that you can use to make healthy thick shakes. Below I recommend to you the best blender for thick shakes and smoothies. So, everything you need to know about how to make thick shakes is right here.
Which Is The Best Blender For Thick Smoothies & Shakes
In my opinion, this is the best blender for thick smoothies and shakes:
Vitamix
A Vitamix is the blender I’ve been using for more than 10 years and I am really amazed by it. It stands out with its strength and ability to blend any of the 56 ingredients listed in this post.
Some of the benefits of the Vitamix I would like to emphasize are:
- Powerful
- Durable
- Easy to clean (self-cleaning in 30-60 seconds)
- Adjustable speed
- Large Batches
However, one thing to note is, that even Vitamix’s can struggle with some of the thicker ingredients in this list. But thankfully a Vitamix comes with a tamper, which is a handy plunger you can use to push the ingredients towards the blade. This makes it easy to make ice cream from frozen fruit or even nut butter just from nuts without having to add any oil.
I bet that the purchase of this blender will be one of your smartest investments.

Hi Katherine,I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.
I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!
I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!
I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.
I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.
I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.
I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!
What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.
I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan! Thankful Stephanie
