28 Smoothies Without Bananas
One of the most common emails I get is to tell me I have too many smoothies made with bananas. Bananas are a great smoothie ingredients as they are cheap, sweet and make a smoothie thick and creamy. However, if you are making a ‘thickie’ you don’t need to use bananas in any of your smoothies as the oats or other carbs used will make the smoothie thick and creamy enough. Sometimes a thickie can actually get too thick if you put in too many bananas.
There are many reasons why people don’t want to use bananas in their smoothies, a lot of people are allergic to them, some just don’t like the taste of them, and if you haven’t already frozen a supply of bananas in your freezer then it’s hard to time ripening bananas at exactly the right time to be ready for your smoothie. In my house there is never enough ripe bananas even though I feel like I buy loads of them!
If you do find a smoothie that you want to try but it has bananas in it, a great alternative to bananas in smoothies is mango. It’s just as sweet and creamy and I actually much prefer the taste of it to bananas.
So I thought I would provide you with a list of all the smoothies I have created without bananas if you don’t have any ripe bananas on hand or don’t use them at all.
Here is a list of all the current smoothies that have no bananas in them. Most of these are ‘thickies’ or ‘green thickies’ which are filling complete meal smoothies containing enough protein to stop those cravings and hunger pangs in their tracks.

Hi Katherine,I just wanted to tell you I completed the 7 day detox and I feel so great.
I have lost 6lbs, do not feel like I need more my morning coffee, the flushing of my facial skin from rosacea has dramatically reduced and I am so excited to wake up each morning and make a green thickie for breakfast!!
I am a stay at-home, homeschooling momma of 3 littles and at times so busy I would forget to feed myself!
I would go most of the day without eating and then snack on random things.
I gained 60 pounds the last 6 years during pregnancy.
I have lost 30lbs but recently plateaued and have felt so frustrated.
I’ve tried everything from paleo and keto to the point where I didn’t know what to eat or how much and felt like even eating fruit was bad for me which thankfully it’s not!
What a game changer for me. Thank you for sharing a simple but effective program.
I’m so excited to continue another week with this plan! Thankful Stephanie

I like the idea of making smoothies without bananas- I’ve barely been using them at all recently! It’s been a nice change and it’s making my smoothies a little lighter on the fruit which is good. So nice of you to make a list for everyone!
Have a great weekend!
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Yes it’s good to have the option. It seems that a lot of people also agree about the bananas. I’ll have any fruit in a smoothie but don’t really enjoy a lot of fruit raw and banana is one of them. At the moment I can’t get enough watermelon. I go through one a day and start drooling when I see it! I’m very glad I’ve got such healthy cravings though, a complete change to my first pregnancy when it was cakes, chocolate and crisps.

My child hates the taste of bananas. We have found that if you add 1/4 of an avocado per serving you get the same creaminess. It also adds a large amount of fibre and healthy fats! Avocados are very mild and fruit covers them up easily. Chocolate even more so.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Ah yes Avocado, how could I forget about that. Of course, it is perfect for making smoothies creamy. They can be a bit hit and miss here and quite expensive so I’m not always keen to buy them but hopefully you can get hold of them much more easily.

Love bananas in my smoothies and thickness but thank you for the variety of non banana smoothies!
Great list, I’m going to try the pb& jelly smoothies soon.
Love the recipes
Thanks

Thank you, I love the pb&J smoothie!

I cannot thank you enough for this! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post and it’s going to have a link somewhere on my site for easy access! I’m (near) vegan and the only fruit I can’t stand is bananas – like – HATE them! I can’t stand the aroma or texture – they make me want to hurl…anyhow…I have been looking for NON-Banana Smoothie Ideas and this is SUPER awesome! Thanks!
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Aww thanks Jennifer. I’m so glad this post has helped you too much. I don’t really eat them raw too often but don’t mind them in a smoothie but I know so many people don’t like them at all so this post has been long overdue! Thank you for letting me know!

Wow! What a great list. Bananas are definitely not the best fruit option for weight. Nice to know there are other options! I’m so glad you linked this up at One Creative Weekend! I love it! Hope your weekend is fantastic.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Yes bananas are one of the most filling fruits. When I was on a raw food diet I mainly lived on bananas and lost 56 pounds but they were my main source of calories, so I guess if you’re eating them with other things it’s easy to go overboard with them. Thank you, hope you had a great weekend too!
Jenna says
I HATE bananas! LOL. Definitely will be checking out some of your smoothie recipes. They look so healthy and delicious.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Ha ha! You’re not the only one. I don’t really enjoy them raw but do like them in a smoothie for some reason. I hope you enjoy them!
Sherri says
Great List! I am always using bananas as an inexpensive “filler” in my smoothies. Love some new ideas.
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Yes me too, I use bananas a lot in my smoothies as they are so cheap, filling and sweeten it up. Mango is a lot more expensive but I much prefer it.
Lisa says
Thank you so much for the banana free recipes!! I’m allergic to bananas and it’s so hard to find good smoothie recipes that don’t use them
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
That’s great Lisa, I’m so glad my list helped you out.

I can’t eat banana’s so I was happy to see your posting. I will sometimes add avacado to make it creamy, but it will need another
fruit added to sweeten it, pineapple is good for this.

Thank you!!!! I have an oral allergy to raw bananas (I can eat them cooked in things like banana bread, but raw they make my mouth and throat itch and swell up) and have been sad at how many smoothie recipes use them! This is a great list to go from for banana-free smoothies. :)
Cindy says
Perfect! I just ran out of bananas today!!! I’m going to try a few of these! I would LOVE to post my favorite on my blog! (Giving you credit, of course! Can I get your permission?

FYI: recipie #28, Sweet Punch Romaine Lettuce Smoothie
has banana in the ingredients
Katherine Natalia @ Green Thickies says
Oops! Not sure how that one slipped through. I must have missed that one. I’ve now updated the recipe so that you have the option of replacing the banana with mango. Mango is just as sweet so it’s a great substitute for banana. Thank you so much for letting me know!
Erica says
So glad I came across this list! I recently discovered that I’m probably allergic to bananas and realized I would not be able to use them in my smoothies. I was so disappointed because I dearly love bananas. :/ Thank you for the banana-free options. :)
