Are Smoothies Considered Raw?
Not all smoothies are raw. It depends on what ingredients you add to them. As long as you add uncooked whole food in its natural state, it is considered raw food. Fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, and even some grains are raw unless they have been heat-treated.
Foods such as nuts, seeds, oats, syrups, and packaged foods are often used on a raw food diet, but most of the time they are actually heat treated.
However, if you base your diet on healthy whole foods, I don’t think it’s important to obsess over how raw certain foods are, especially if they come out of a packet.
If you eat more raw fruit and vegetables and a small number of whole foods from packets, you’ll really notice the difference in your health and weight loss.
How Does A Raw Vegan Diet Help You Lose Weight?
There are so many ways that a raw food diet can help you lose weight. I’m going to share a few of the most important reasons:
1) Raw Food Provides Nutrients Needed To Stop Your Hunger
Raw food is so full of nutrients that it stops your cravings and hunger pangs for more food, so you end up eating much less than you would normally. The body sends hunger signals to your brain when it is starved of nutrients.
Enough nutrients mean fewer hunger signals.
2) Raw Food Removes Toxins Stored In Fat
Raw food is very natural, in its whole state which is much easier for the body to digest. Faster digestion means getting rid of all the toxic fat cells in your body.
3) Raw Food Is Low In Calories
Raw food, such as fruit and vegetables are very high in density but low in calories. That means you can eat a humongous salad which looks massive, but in reality, your calories are much less than they would be with a much smaller meal.
4) Raw Food Cleanses The Body
Raw food cleanses the body from all the toxins because the food is so clean and healthy, that the body can release stored fat and cleanse easily.
5) Raw Food Gives You So Much Energy You Want To Exercise More
Raw food is literally alive. This gives you a crazy amount of energy which translates into you actually wanting to do exercise as you have so much energy to burn. This is very helpful for weight loss.
6) Raw Food Stops Your Cravings
If you are strict about a raw food diet for a period of time, you’ll completely eliminate all foods that cause cravings such as refined sugar, refined salt, and fried fatty foods. Not to mention artificial stimulants purposely added to packaged foods to make you need more of them.
Once you get all the processed junk out of your system, your cravings will melt away. No longer will you be tempted by packaged food. You will look at packaged food like it’s plastic. It simply loses its appeal.
How Does A Raw Vegan Diet Cleanse And Detox You?
Fruits are especially cleansing for the lymphatic system due to their astringent compounds.
Fruits also have a special affinity to cleanse the lymphatic system due to their high content of astringent substances.
Fruit is also digested the fastest out of all foods, so it is the best food to eat when you need to improve your health.
There are other foods that people eat on a raw food diet such as nuts, seeds, and avocado which do contain nutrients. But these take much longer to digest, and will, therefore, slow down your cleanse and your healing.
Eating just fruit and vegetables for a short period of time will give your body a good cleanse. But eating this way for too long is not good for the body, as it needs more of a variety of nutrients and essential fats for good long term health.
Is Raw Kale In Smoothies Good For You?
Raw kale is one of the healthiest things you can eat in smoothies aside from spinach which can be healthier on some levels.
However, there are a lot of benefits that you can only get from kale or other cruciferous vegetables over any other vegetables.
The compound that is only present in kale, and not spinach is called sulforaphane and it has been proven by science to actually improve your DNA.
So is it important to eat raw kale?
It is important to eat raw kale because sulforaphane is only active when the cruciferous vegetable is raw. Although I did hear Dr. Michael Gregor mention that you can significantly increase the amount of sulforaphane in cooked cruciferous veggies by adding mustard powder to it.
But we’re hardly likely to want mustard in our smoothies, are we?
So let’s just keep the kale raw and keep these amazing benefits active.
Is Raw Spinach In Smoothies Good For You?
Similar to kale, the benefits of spinach are most active when the spinach is raw, so adding raw spinach to your smoothie is so much better than cooked spinach.
Spinach has double the amount of vitamin A that kale does and is higher in some other nutrients too, so it does have it’s own benefits.
Spinach is also lower in calories than kale and has a milder taste which makes the taste completely masked by the other food.
Kale, on the other hand, has a slightly stronger taste that is sometimes noticeable.
So which leafy green should we add to our smoothie?
I say both. For me personally, I use mainly spinach and a small amount of kale in my smoothies to get the best of both worlds.

9) Eating sweet food in the morning is exactly what our bodies are designed for. We have a sweet tooth for a reason, and the reason is to encourage us to eat sweet fruit which contains so many of the nutrients our bodies need.
The problem is we’ve created ultra sweet food that makes fruit taste boring in comparison. A little while on a clean eating raw food diet will give you back your taste buds and you’ll enjoy your fruit again.
10) You can pack all of the foods you don’t like eating on their own in a smoothie. How likely is it that you are going to eat a big plate of raw spinach for breakfast? Or a cup of heart-healthy beans without any fatty dressing? Will you really eat 2 cups of plain berries without any sugar?
And can you stomach some plain oats without some creamy milk? You can throw all of these healthy foods into a smoothie and make a concoction that tastes just like cake! It is so easy to drink a good tasting smoothie with hidden healthy ingredients. But so much harder if you tried to eat them on their own.
